Our slow-grown free-range chickens are not fed exclusively organic feed, but they lead a very natural, free range life for 2-3 times the life of a supermarket chicken. Our farmers ensure that the animals are not only given large fields to roam in, they are also fed and watered outside too. Chickens fed and watered inside will typically not risk going outside due to worry that they will lose access to their food and water.
The farmers carefully select slower-growing breeds that take over 80 days to rear and are suited to this lifestyle. The long and varied life means that our chickens at around 2.2kg are bigger than you are used to from the supermarkets.
Turbo-growing supermarket chicken breeds are grown in as little as 30 days and typically could not in fact survive longer, as their hearts cannot continue to support such rapid muscle growth.
The free range life of our chickens means they have a far more varied diet from the insects and plants around them, and means they recycle nutrients into the soil in their fields too, further strengthening the ecosystem that they live in and, therefore, the carbon captured into the soil.
It is also a revelation how much better a roast chicken cooks and tastes when the best, most suitable breeds are reared slowly and as nature intended.
